🔐 Privacy Policy

SakayGuide Privacy Policy

We keep things simple: SakayGuide collects the minimum information needed to work, and only with your permission.

Last updated: August 2, 2026

1. Overview

SakayGuide is a free, non-official reference tool for Philippine commuters. Our privacy approach is minimal and transparent:

  • We do not require you to create an account.
  • We do not sell your data.
  • We do not collect or store your individual travel history without your consent.
  • Location access is optional and controlled by you.

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following information to make the website work:

a) Location (optional)

When you press "Near Me" or allow location detection, your browser may share your GPS coordinates. This is used only to show nearby gas stations or place your start pin on the map. If you decline, we use an approximate IP-based location, or the default Intramuros center.

b) Saved Routes & Places

Routes and places you save are stored in your browser's local storage on your device only. They never leave your device.

c) Notification Preference

Whether you enable browser notifications is stored locally on your device.

d) Anonymous Event Counts (planned)

As part of our growth plan, we may count anonymous events — such as fare calculations, gas-station searches, and completed route plans — to understand how the website is used. No personally identifiable travel history is collected unless you clearly consent.

3. Location Data

Location is never stored on our servers and is never linked to an account or profile.
  • Your coordinates are sent to map and routing providers only for the specific request you make (e.g., TomTom routing).
  • If GPS is unavailable, we may use an approximate location derived from your IP address (via ipapi.co / ip-api.com) for nearby results.
  • You can deny location access at any time in your browser settings.

4. Device Storage (Local Storage)

Saved places, saved routes, and preferences are stored in your browser's local storage. This means:

  • Your saved data stays on your device.
  • Clearing your browser data or using a different device will remove your saved items.
  • We cannot see or retrieve your saved data.

5. Third-Party Services

To provide fares, maps, traffic, and fuel prices, SakayGuide uses third-party services. Each service may process the information you provide to it, and is governed by its own privacy policy.

Service What It Receives Purpose
TomTom Your chosen start/destination coordinates Traffic tiles, incidents, and route calculation
GasWatchPH (via our proxy) Fuel price requests (no personal data) Live gas station prices and advisories
OpenStreetMap Map tile requests Interactive map display
Nominatim (OSM) Search terms / coordinates you enter Place search and reverse geocoding
ipapi.co / ip-api.com Your IP address Approximate location fallback when GPS is unavailable

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these providers for details on their data handling.

6. Analytics & Event Tracking

Our growth plan (see the About page) calls for privacy-respecting event tracking of key actions:

  • Fare calculation
  • Terminal-map use
  • Gas-station search
  • Route completion
  • Saved route
  • Ride tracker start
  • Notification opt-in
These are counted anonymously for improvement. No personally identifiable travel history is collected unless you clearly consent.

7. Notifications

We may ask for permission to send browser notifications for meaningful updates (such as fare or fuel-price changes). Notification access is optional, can be toggled anytime, and is only enabled after you grant permission.

8. Cookies

SakayGuide itself does not rely on tracking cookies. Third-party services (such as map tile providers) may set their own cookies or cache data as part of normal browser operation.

9. Children's Privacy

SakayGuide is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

10. Data Retention & Security

Because we do not run accounts or store your personal data on servers, there is little to retain. Anonymous event counts, if collected, are aggregated and not linked to individuals. We use industry-standard practices (HTTPS, rate limiting) to keep the website secure.

11. Your Choices

  • Location: Allow or deny GPS access in your browser or device settings.
  • Notifications: Toggle the notification button on the website or manage permissions in your browser.
  • Saved data: Delete saved places/routes on the Saved page, or clear your browser data.
  • Opt-out of tracking: Since our tracking is anonymous and consent-based, you may decline permission prompts at any time.

12. Changes & Contact

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date reflects the most recent change. For questions about privacy or to report a concern, see the FAQ or use our feedback channel.
